Chimaera / Ratfish skull (Hydrolagus sp.)

This is a great looking skull. It is from a chimaera, Hydrolagus sp. The chimaera are a family of cartilaginous fish related to the sharks and rays. Most of the species are deep water dwellers.

The species of chimaera that this skull came from is unknown although it is known that it was caught as bycatch on a commercial fishing boat. The skull has been professionally cleaned, bleached and prepared.

The skull measures 7.5cm length and 6.5cm height. An unusual and interesting skull.
