African throwing club / Rungu
Here is a lovely example of an East African throwing club, also known as a Rungu. These have played an important part in the culture both ceremonially and as a weapon/ hunting implement for hundreds of years. The club is 44cm long and 10.5cm across the head. It is made from local "ironwood" and as such is very hard and very heavy, weighing 750g.
As you can see from the photographs it was all hand carved and over many years has had a few knocks and scrapes as would be expected for an item such as this.
A very tactile piece of East African history.
