Superb antique Tibetan shaman carved human bone amulet.

This is an unusual and interesting item. An antique Tibetan Buddhistic / shaman bead or amulet carved out of human bone. Traditionally these were carved from a patella but this one is actually carved from the head of a human femur and is slightly larger than the patella ones. These were worn by the monks for ceremonial purposes.

Judging by the colour and patina, this is a very old example probably dating from the 19th Century. The carving is nicely detailed with a stylised skull on one side. There are four holes from front to back, presumably to thread it onto cord. On the reverse can be seen wear lines between the parallel holes where the cord has rubbed over time.

This measures 6cm long and 5cm wide and 3.5cm front to back.
